The DBA_MVIEWS dictionary view tells you all about the materialized views in your database, including whether the query rewrite feature is enabled or not on the views. Throughout this chapter you ve seen various flavors of coupling. If there were only one flavor, then you might be able to measure coupling using a simple number (e.g., 49). The value would tell you how coupled one entity is to another entity. Since there are multiple flavors of coupling, you need to measure the amount of coupling for each flavor separately. There are three basic coupling flavors: logic, type, and signature coupling. Logic coupling has two main subflavors: literal and algorithmic. Type coupling has two main subflavors: ambiguous and unambiguous. Signature coupling has no subflavors. To measure the coupling of a class, you need to measure the value of the five coupling values: Ll, La, Ta, Tu, and s. You can consider these five entities as dimensions in a five-dimensional coupling space, and you can treat the space mathematically like a vector space. Because you re dealing with five dimensions, you can t easily represent coupling space on a single graph. You can use two Cartesian planes to show the bidimensional logic- and type-coupling spaces, as shown in Figure 1-26.

You can use the DBA_INDEXES dictionary view to find out just about everything you need to know about the indexes in your database, including the index name, index type, and the table and tablespace an index belongs to. Certain columns, such as BLEVEL (tells you the level of the B-tree index) and DISTINCT_KEYS (number of distinct index key values), are populated only if you ve collected statistics for the index using the DBMS_STATS package.

The DBA_IND_COLUMNS view is similar to the DBA_CONS_COLUMNS view in structure, and it provides information on all the indexed columns in every table. This is important during SQL performance tuning when you notice that the query is using an index, but you aren t sure exactly on which columns the index is defined. The query in Listing 7-25 may reveal that the table has indexes on the wrong columns after all.
