If you haven t used XML web services before, this may sound like an odd mix of technologies, but in practice they work together very well. (From here through the rest of the book, I ll simply refer to the XML web service as a web service. ) If you build a web service, your intention is generally for someone to be able to invoke it. If you have millions of clients, you don t want each of them calling you asking you how to access your service; rather, you want to publish the methodology for talking to your service and understanding its responses. This is the purpose of the WSDL document your service should generate. Fortunately, if you build your web service by using ASP.NET, the WSDL document is automatically generated for you, as you ll see later in this chapter. Next, you need a way to communicate with the service, and this is where SOAP and HTTP come in. The simplest method is to post a document to a service and have the response returned to you by the service. This is exactly what the SOAP architects intended. You can see the bigger picture in Figure 5-1.

Exposing your functionality in this manner and allowing it to be generally used by outside organizations leads to the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). Instead of designing monolithic applications that deal with everything from data to presentation in a single tier, you can design small, nimble services that implement functionality. These services can then be combined and orchestrated into an application. In addition to this, you can interface with services from business partners in a manner that may have been difficult, if not impossible, before this technology became commonplace.
